Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby to produce new Stargate

Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby (Parka in a Penguin) to Produce Stargate for Amazon / MGM

Stargate fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming months. You may or may not be aware but we have contacts in and around MGM/Amazon that leak little bits of information to us about the development of a new Stargate series and they’re responsible for the leak we put out on SciTrek that Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby had been approached to pitch ideas for Stargate.

Well we have fantastic news, we have been told that Penguin in a Parka which is owned and operated by Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby, have won the race and are pushing forward with contracts to develop a new Stargate series.

When can we expect an official announcement? Well luckily we dont think we’ll have to wait too long. In fact we could hear something as soon as January.

So exciting times. mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby responsible for bringing us amazing shows like The Expanse are dipping their toes into the sleeping giant of Scifi that is Stargate.

Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are screenwriters best known for their work on Children of Men (for which they were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay)[1] and Iron Man. Their other work includes First Snow, which was also directed by Fergus,[2] and Cowboys & Aliens.[3]

Who are Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby?

Mark Fergus and his professional partner Hawk Otsby have been in a working relationship for a very long time, helping to write movies such as Children of Men, Iron man, and Cowboys and aliens, But sci-fi fans will probably know them best as the guys that bought the Expanse to our screens.

Whilst the expanse is originally created by James S.A Corey as a series of Novels it was Mark and Hawk who developed the show for the Syfy network. They were both also executive producers for the show and have been actively developing the show ever since,  even after it was picked up by Amazon Prime back in 2019 after Syfy had canceled the series in 2018.

So what does this mean for Stargate? Well if you are a regular Scitrekker you will have no doubt heard by now that Amazon was soliciting pitches for a brand new Stargate series, One duo that was approached to do so was mark and Hawk of Penguin in a Parka (Their production company) – A recent video from this channel announced it is very likely now, that they have won the race and are in the process of drawing up contracts. We might expect to see an official announcement as early as January in 2023.

Now tell me guys in the comments, what do you think about this news? Are you satisfied that Stargate will be in good hands with these two?

Whatever happens, Stargate is closer than it has ever been to being back on our screens which is the biggest development update we’ve had in well over 6 months. We’re all aware that Brad Wright’s script didn’t make the cut., And for whatever the reason may be Amazon has decided to press on with someone else. This doesn’t mean, however, that Brad Wright won’t be involved at all and we could see a partnership between Penguin in a parka and Brad wright in the future.

Brad Wright, Joseph Mallozzi, and Robert C Cooper all worked on the original Stargate television series, alongside countless talented writers, directors, and producers. Could it be that if Stargate returns, Mark and Hawk draw on the talents of the previous team to appease fans and make the greatest version of Stargate they can?

This is very good news! I love their story treatments, and am excited they’re taking this project on.

Stargates Atlantis and Universe, and Terminators Genisys and Dark Fate, expanded ideas about gating; time travel; power sources; how human and machine societies interact; and about how we can survive in space. And then, having taken us along for the ride, they abruptly let us dangle. The same thing happened at the very end of Revolution, I believe, where they expanded on the cybernetic nano society, then dropped it without warning …. As if some people fear new ideas.

I hope we can count on the good story lines continuing, and the funding remaining in place so that they can. These writers will do well, if the support is there for them to do so.
