Its been a rough 18 months, we’ve been telling you about the ups and downs regarding the development of a new Stargate series thanks to our sources in and around Amazon and MGM.
Since before the purchase of MGM to Amazon, we were reporting on news that MGM were in talks with Brad Wright to develop a new series, he had a script that was ready to go and the studio even got as far as storyboarding. That was until the global pandemic hit and unfortunately through a MASSIVE spanner in the works, which left studios all over the world scrambling due to the entire world being confined to their homes.
After the deal went through, many of us hoped that the conversations between MGM and brad wright would continue and that we would see an official announcement within 12 months, that sadly did not happen and it has now been just over a year since the deal went through.
So what happened?
Well, Amazon saw the state of MGM and decided it was best to restructure the entire studio into a much more well oiled machine, this was something that annoyed executives at MGM who unfortunately ended up leaving the studio. There is some conjecture that they were forced out, but that is neither here nor there at this point.
After 3 to 4 months of restructuring, the studio started to solicit pitches from writers for a new Stargate series and/or movie, that is when Mark Fergus was first put onto our radar. Known most notebly for his work on The Expanse alongside Hawk Otsby, Fergus had off of his own back created a show “bible” and wowed the executives at Amazon/MGM. As far as we know he is STILL in the running to lead the new TV Show.
We then heard rumours that they were planning a movie and not a TV show. Which now we know to mean, there will be a Cinematic release followed by a TV show.
Now we are expecting an announcement at Sandiego Comiccon and have even heard rumours that Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping are going to appear at the convention. This is all we have been saying for many months now.
But now it seems as though there is little bits of confirmation coming from the actors themselves.
In a recent interview with Shuttlepod, David Blue Who plays Eli Wallace from Stargate Universe, said
“as I’m sure you guys do so I hear some of the pitches some of where it’s at and every once in a while you get a little whiff that maybe they’re going to go this way or go that way and some of the stuff sounds cool some of it don’t I will say this I hope that whatever they do honors what came before.”
He goes on to say
“any actor would of course come back I will tell you having talked to them every actor on SGU that I’ve spoken to would come back in a heartbeat every actor from SG-1 and Atlantis for the most part”
David pretty much confirms he has heard some of the pitches and that he likes some of it and dislikes other parts. (He dislikes the Bad Robot pitch perhaps?)#
It wasn’t just David Blue who revealed there was a show in the works though, Brian J. Smith Who plays Lt, Matthew Scott in Stargate universe said this.
“listen we’re still cryogenically frozen on that on the Destiny on that spaceship out there somewhere in the cosmos so I mean it’s kind of teed up for someone to do a movie or something where we can finish off that story”
He goes on to say
“so I know that they’re doing another Stargate like they’re kind of Reviving the franchise a little bit but they want to do these huge movies you know”
